In China, there are also industries producing L-Cysteine (an amino acid) from…hair! It has been reported that some food industries (perhaps unknowingly) used L-cysteine derived from hair as an additive in baked goods.

So read the labels of your products and check for E920, and in case of doubt, you can approach the manufacturer for clarification.

Ironically, there’s some evidence that L-cysteine can be used as a supplement to aid in hair growth (for those suffering from hair loss).
